Tailoring Course at Didi Vocational Centre

Empowering Women Through the Art of Tailoring

At Didi Vocational Centre, we are proud to offer our Tailoring Course, designed to equip women with essential garment-making skills and open new pathways for financial independence, employment, and personal growth. Thanks to the generous support of our Australian sponsors, we are able to provide a safe and supportive learning environment for women in our community.

Course Overview

The Tailoring Course is designed to provide both foundational and hands-on skills in garment construction and sewing techniques. The course runs for six months, with a focused curriculum that includes:

  • Pattern Making: Learn how to create and adjust patterns for different garment styles, an essential skill for any tailor.
  • Basic Use of the Treadle Machine: Get familiar with the traditional sewing machine that is still widely used in tailoring shops and homes.
  • Machine Maintenance: Understand how to care for and maintain your sewing machine to ensure long-lasting performance
  • Over-locker Sewing: Gain proficiency in using an over-locker machine for finishing seams and creating professional-quality edges.

The journey begins with learning basic techniques on newspaper—a simple yet effective way to practice the craft. By the end of the course, students are expected to have mastered the skills necessary to make a Khurta, a traditional outfit consisting of a brightly coloured dress and pants with scarf. This garment is a cultural staple and a key piece in the tailoring industry.

Career Pathways

At the end of the six-month course, students sit for an exam of accomplishment to assess their skills and craftsmanship. Those who successfully complete the exam will be able to:

  • Register with a government tailoring course to continue their training and gain further recognition.
  • Work in tailoring shops, using their newly acquired skills to help others create custom garments.
  • Start their own home business, offering tailoring services in their community or beyond.

Our students leave with not just the technical skills, but the confidence to build careers that change their lives and the lives of others. 80% success rate for graduating students.

Advanced Tailoring Course

For those who have completed the basic course and are looking to take their skills to the next level, we offer an Advanced Course. This specialised program is available annually for:

  • Highly accomplished students from our six-month course.
  • Past students who want to further develop their abilities.

The Advanced Course dives deeper into more complex techniques and advanced tailoring skills, providing students with the opportunity to expand their craft and enhance their employment prospects.
